What it’s about

Elizabeth Bennet is one of five sisters whose mother badly wants them married. When the proud and wealthy Mr Darcy arrives in the neighbourhood, Elizabeth decides she dislikes him, and he gives her plenty of reasons.

Most of the story happens in conversation: at balls, in drawing rooms and in letters. Austen's narrator is dry and often very funny about everyone involved.

  • First impressions
  • Class and money
  • Pride on both sides
“It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.”
Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice

Why people stop, and how to finish

The long sentences and the many Bennets, Lucases and Bingleys can blur together in the first chapters, before the story finds its pace.

What helps: Push through the first ten chapters, then it moves fast. Listening helps here: Austen's dialogue is made to be heard.
